Great Meeting Bodes Well for Future

-------- Your tax dollars at work ---------

SHELBURNE MEETING WITH MINISTERS

PERCY PARIS & STERLING BELLIVEAU

For those of you who couldn't attend, this morning's meeting between the two ministers and municipal officials was well attended and observed by some 25 citizens. CBC television and a reporter from the local Coast Guard newspaper also were present.

Municipal officials each had an opportunity to identify priorities in each of their communities and Minister Paris provided those assembled with assurances that the new government placed a high priority on face to face communications and focused efforts to help rural communities with their development efforts.

All in all..... I think it was a good first meeting and gave local officials, as well as residents, an opportunity to take the measure of our new government and for these two ministers to conclude that they and their colleagues should come to Shelburne County more often.......

Thanks Ed for getting the public involved.
Hopefully a weekend or evening gathering with the local and prov. politicians will happen ..Lots more input/support by citizens is needed to get answers to major sore spots due to loss of valuable jobs.LISTEN TO A sincere YOUNG MAYOR(no notes needed) WHO REMEMBERS WHY HE HAS THAT POSITION! Good fellow MAYOR HUSKILSON!!!!

Great first meeting with Minister Paris. He appeared to be sincere in working with our councils and it was good to see our MLA in such good humour. Warden Embree and Mayors' Huskilson and Delaney must see "a bit" of light at the end of the tunnel today.
It was nice meeting you Mr. and Mrs. Cayer!

Hi Ed, You forgot to report that we were model citizens today - no outbursts, no rolled eyes, no walk-outs - not bad huh? We hope Minister Paris will come back soon with some good news in regards to Irvings' and NSBI...
Loved Darian's "cutting to the chase", questioned Warden Halliday's short message, couldn't hear Mayor Stoddard's fill-in, give credit to Warden Embree for trying to do his best, and would have loved to have read what was in that plain, brown envelope Mayor Delaney - pass a copy to Ed and he'll post it.
All in all it was an hour well spent - cheers!

I have to wonder why more of Shelburne Town Councillors were not present. Reliable sources say some were not told about the meeting.Could it be that mayor and his side kick what to keep the others in the dark. In all,yes a great first meeting.Oh,yes the deputy mayor of Shelburne has a nice purse.Glad she showed it off.May start shopping at Frenchys also.........

Hope CBC made their late visit worthwhile to hear about what politicians had already presented ....
MAYBE BANDAID FILM JOBS GOT THEM SIDE-TRACKED....WOW !

Warden Embree spoke of the doctor shortage in the area. Deputy Mayor Acker spoke of the immorality of luring doctors to communities with lucrative offers - desperate measures for desperate times.
Quality of life and a decent income makes for happy rural M.D.s.
There has to be a system whereby Locums are available during vacations, etc. We can't entice business to set up shop without ER availability. It's a vicious circle.
Did you know that a Canadian trained doctor from out-of-province has to go through a litany of red-tape plus fees in order to practice medicine in N.S.? I know of one who comtemplated doing locum work in N.S. during the summer, but found the hassle wasn't worth the effort. Come one come all I say - beautiful area, friendly people and close to the city. Welcome to Shelburne!!! - S.Fry

Our mayor is only one who appeared uncertain about how to react to various individuals as he was out of his comfort zone IN TOWN HALL surrounded by puppets.
Be the gruff voiced fellow ya used ta be with P.Comeau and encourage good things (jobs)/people to come to town.....Show the spark you used to have....What has gone wrong ?!

3:25 If this had been an evening meeting you would have had more attendees - thankfully there are many who have day jobs in town. That's sooo funny that you think the Mayor kept info on the mtg. from his councillors. We no longer live in the dark ages - SCT and Ed's site had the info and it also made CBC radio this morning.

All councillors not needed in that type of gathering but Harris & Rhuland were in audience...Mayor D and Deputy A did the honors of presenting concerns...
Brn envelope as part of unfriendly, secretive mode........why ?????
The news of this meeting travelled well on line ...thanks to Mr. Cayer....

2:46 I was also impressed with Mayor Huskilson's presentation. I was disappointed that he didn't do better during the last election, but I can understand Sterling's appeal also. I hope partisanship can be set aside for four years so we can get back on track in hopes of attracting at least one major employer to the area, and retaining the 70+ jobs at Ship Repair. May the wind be at our back in place of the hot air blowing in our faces from Yarmouth.

3:24 Was I asleep when Mayor Delaney spoke of the Wharf Improvment Project or was it a non-issue at the meeting today?

Interesting CMAJ article online regards locums out of prov:
Willis l76(1):69 CMAJ

Until Canada adopts a standard certification we will see no changes in locum shortages.

Read online: Portable Licensure: On The Distant Horizon? (CMA/2001)

That distant horizon hasn't moved any closer. Until our N.S. Med. Assoc. addresses the problem, we are going to face doctor shortages/closed ERs for years to come.
We've come to rely on ER availability 24/7 and something has to change to regain that service. Bureaucracy = red tape = inefficiency = solution: expel the empty suits!

Really think the meeting was to draw people out of woodwork so certain folks could check to see who would dare break from the norm....

Sad to think those certain few will still dictate as that is born and bred.....and scared still hide.

Keep up the honest way for approaching problems !

Ooops, I'm from the old school when lower case "l" was used as 1.

Not well informed to get the thought involved....

10:15 Do you really think we still have a few kicking around who were born and bred to dictate?Their ship sailed long ago.We just have to work harder to get more folks involved in this whole process of opening all closed doors. There's no shame in being interested in how the coffers are being managed and ensuring that the troughs are permanently removed.

Oh, now I UNDERSTAND THIS IS WAY OF BEING VERY GOOD AT YOUR TYPING SKILLS,,,NOT MY FORTE....

Old or new school process....Having fun learning and never have pretended to be a know -it -all.

EVERYONE KEEP ON SHARING IN FRIENDLY MANNER.AGAIN,IT IS OKAY TO DISAGREE. THANKS !

Hopefully lots of letters are being processed by our reps, local and prov.,about all your deep concerns reminding them we want to believe in this government.
Blogs are only part of getting their attention with sincere attention.Belliveau seemed to be lost for helpful words and bored me with his dang pen- comparison!!!!!Paris over did his all about himself talk ! What is Dexter doing for the area...besides avoiding ....????We need more young people trained by mayor Huskilson for these important undertakings.....to speak from the heart .....He puts lots of energy, research and time into his position as a leader.

Fridays meeting with the Ministers Paris and Belliveau was a monumental step: first that it took
place and secondly that everyone present was so civil. It speaks well of the ministers interest and
intent and how we have progressed as a social group. I would want to be optimistic that it will spark future dialogue with other jurisdictions. The ministers did not make promises of immediate remedy and it would have been a sign of lip service if they had. The issues are many and intricate when the number of interests are considered .Understandable most of the local concern is centred around jobs and health care .Most of the early comments have been personality slanted which is good to get behind us for there is much productive work to be done.
Let us not be divided among ourselves .It is a time for unity.
There is a word that should be given consideration soon although I realise that many see it as a taboo utterance: AMALGAMATION !!! The me syndrome was evident as the local reps spoke!

Ed you are to be commended for your effort and success in this endeaveau.

We need to know if the audit of SWSDA is still on the NDP agenda. Hopefully Minister Paris will have a quick response to Mayor Delaney's concerns in regards to the municipal debts, etc. We need a clean slate in order to develop a unified voice. Time isn't on our side...

Anonymous said...

Ian Thompson has the facts and figures at his fingertips. Change in government is no excuse for Minister Paris not to release this information in a timely manner and any rhetoric will be rejected. FACT: SWSDA failed Shelburne County with its questionable land deals, spending and projects. We refuse to sit on the sidelines for another decade. - S.Fry

Amalgamation would be the sensible route to take but can't you hear the gnashing of the old diehards teeth now? Just having the five councils agree to live under one RDA roof would be a monumental achievement.

Sincerely THIS PARTY NOW IN CHARGE HAS TO ACT LIKE THEY ARE IN CONTROL
AND I just do not SEE OR GET FEELING THEY KNOW HOW TO TACKLE OUR PAST AND PRESENT HEAP OF PROBLEMS. WE ARE OBVIOUSLY IN NEED OF GOOD NEWS FOR AREA TO GET THE POSITIVE VIBES once more.Listen NDP TO THE ONES WHO PUT YOU IN YOUR SEATS...They know what will help majority....

Anonymous said...

MORE ACTION IS NEEDED NOW.....
Those with power show it in a helpful way by investing in a county with hard working citizens that will make you proud!!!!!!!

Your time is NOW to show you are more than promises.

It raises questions as to why Delaney seemed so secretive about his submission to the ministers.Brown envelope.really!Although both Delaney and Acker showed effort they greatly lack in presentation skills. Some training is required.Acker was criticized re her purse handling when perhaps it really points to a bad case of the jitters!Preparation will relieve this for her. See there are answers.

I have sympathy for the Dep. Mayor and others suffering from a case of nerves!
Honesty and transparency are all we ask of them. Thanks to everyone involved in Friday's meeting.

Anonymous said...

Yes the Dep Mayors afflection is a shame. How she must struggle through political life. There must be remedial clinics that could possibly help.I suppose that with all thats being uncovered everyone is getting edgy wondering who will be revealed next! Perhaps if someone were hiding something it would be best to get it out in the open sooner than later.

Yes,the questions in this blog must be stressful for some but these things must be dealt with.I do not think the heat should be turned off because some individuals may think they are in trouble. This certainly is not a witch hunt but rather a revealing of the truth.
Oddly enough usually in these matters the culprits do not admit their wrongs even to themselves which can have dire consequences.

Doctor shortages,ER closures. Wake up good people the shortage began in 1980's when MD's started a migration to greener pasturss...the USA. Since then many have returned.Ever go to a Metro ER? They never close but the wait times!!!
I do not think that our negative press is an incentive to locate here. And we are a tad bit racist at times. The answer to all our woes is within ourselves. There I said it.

Anonymous said...

To: There I Said It, What negative press are you referring to? As for racism, what do you base this statement on? I've had many foreign trained doctors over the years that are tops in my book and of many other patients I know...How is the answer to all our woes within ourselves? Please enlighten us so we can mend our ways and hopefully see a few new doctors settle in our area. Anxiously awaiting your advice...
BTW, is there a possibility that our Med Schools aren't encouraging their students to practice Family Med and are forcing them to select their speciality too early, hmmm...

If you want a "feel good" morning about Shelburne County go to: www.shelburnedocs.com
Kudos to the creator(s) - you do us proud!

RE:9:15am. (1) Most new coverage for the area is for closures,arrests,etc.(2) Racism ! Do you have your head in the sand? It began with the Loyalist and goes on. (3) the answers are within ourselves in that we have to be willing to change old habits.(4) For a long time doctors here actually wanted services cut.
What about social life for a a doctor? Hardly the mecca of culture! Take some time and ponder these things................You seem a resonable person.

Anonymous said...

www.shelburnedocs.com is nothing very new. Some careful pictures. C- for effort. Next.

PS Doctors are educated people they are not going to make decisions based upon a web site. They will visit here unannounced and see the dire reality for themselves.

What a nice Internet site to visit Shelburne Hospital staff and our town's recent arrivals. We do have a good town and I hope more will see this and appreciate what we have. It's easy to criticize but it's far harder to work together to improve things.Let's all do what we can to make it even better.Thank you Mr. Cayer.

11:05 I try to see both sides but in the year 2009 I can't see yours - oh, I do agree with Medel's poor news coverage.
Geez, we have the Osprey, Clyde River Golf Club, Curling Club, Arena, fishing, hunting, boating/sailing, and numerous walking trails for jogging, hiking, etc.
We all want to see a major employer set up shop, and that is going to take time.
I guess we make a place what we want it to be.I'm sorry to see you haven't made it your place yet...

11:12 Is that darn Troll back again? Remedy for you is to take a long walk on a short pier.

Some one refered to me as a troll. This is wrong. This I thought was about facts. If my facts differs with those of someone elso so be it. But lets quit the name called and get all the facts out and sort out which ones we want to keep.Seems to me that its the name caller that wants to divide us! Is that you Frank or is it you!!

Are all the anon really to come out of the closet? We need to have meetings.Get organized.Started doing rather than just talking!Tonight is a town council meeting.Lets all visit it.Picket it! Do something besides blow wind.................
