Folks Are Demanding More.....

-------- Your tax dollars at work ---------

Today the Chronicle Herald Reports that the Auditor General is pushing to get authorization to audit MPs and Senators..... Not Suprising given recent events.

In the U.S. Lord Black finds himself convicted and in jail because of reported abuse of power and skimming of money from shareholders.

.....In Newfoundland expense claim fraud lands a former Minister in Jail.

In England the Speaker of the House of Commons resigns over claims of expense claim fraud.

These are hard times for many and electors everywhere are beginning to demand better scrutiny and management of public funds.....

If you were going to improve things at SWSDA, what would you propose?

SWSDA can only move forward with a forensic audit. That will clear the air in this questionable public agency. For our N.S. Auditor General not to have jurisdiction in RDA business is strange - that is something that is going to have to change.

It was a touch of gallows humour in your comment this morning Ed - on a moat being built around the SWSDA bldg., and for Rod to reply that Frank and the boys were heading down the hill to start the shovel ready project. Did you notice the British Speaker of the House was caught misusing funds for the cleaning of his moat? Amazing!

At least you have lots of support from the area's citizens, and not much is going to escape their notice in the future. All the best!

I would suggest that SWSDA's complete board be disbanded and that an independent accounting firm be appointed by the new Provincial Government to conduct a thorough forensic audit of all of SWASDA's dealings. That this be completely funded by our Provincial Government which has, to date, been negligent in this matter. The findings be made public and that if appropriate, a criminal investigation, charges and restitution be sought.

Shelburne Co. councils and SWSDA have a Fidelity Bond - this covers employee fraud.
Lack of vigilance by inexperienced voting members, who were willing to let the ex-banker run the show without any checks and balances, while the board "put in their time" at the monthly meetings, was doomed to fail.

Neglect by various provincial ministers in Economic and Rural Development(ERD); and Svc N.S. and Municipal Relations, currently under MLA Richard Hurlburt's watch, are at fault in the current crisis SWSDA finds itself in.

SWSDA's affairs will be settled when a forensic audit is ordered, which is inevitable at this stage.

Love your blog's background as I patiently wait for dial-up to allow me to view the page I want - did you know if you stare at it long enough it is one of those 3-D thangs?

The "Aramony Syndrome" (Wm Aramony was President of United Way America) - ... a board sits back and relies on a strong executive, then the executive treats himself to... outrageous expense accounts, and other misappropriation of funds, while the board fails in its duty of oversight.
