A good RDA....

-------- Your tax dollars at work ---------

SWSDA and Mr. Anderson and Rod Rose have made that expression an oxymoron.

Hard to imageine a good RDA that either Mr. Rose or Mr. Anderson are involved with..... frankly hard to imagine the likes of many who are now involved.......

What would a good RDA do ..... in my humble opinion.... it would stop inserting itself into the development process as the power broker and help individuals and groups in their development efforts learn ahow to do it sfor themselves.

Of course, that's not what happens now.... Mr.Anderson has inserted himself into libaries, public access initiatives and or the internet, support for volunteers, employment of the unemployed and on and on.... it just doesn't seem to have an end.... I heard this week that the expansion of the library in Shelburne has been delayed while municipalities decide what to do... because SWSDA wanted to include an office for itself as part of the expenasion.

Our wardens and deputy mayors are on the BofD to ensure this RDA is working in Shelburne Co's best interest. The past 13+ years have proven this RDA is not fulfilling the mandate and as a result there have been few improvements in the business sector, with no sign of at least one major business relocating to this area which would create job spin-offs; the youth are migrating out of their communities leaving an aging population to carry the tax burden; and an untrained BofD have given the CEO total control without the proper BofD checks and balances which appears to have been the major cause for its lack of success.
I suggest we either demand an RDA for Shelburne Co.; or disband SWSDA and allow our municipalities and towns to hire appropriate staff to pursue funds for major projects which would eventually create permanent jobs. We would in essence be cutting out the "middle man" who has managed this dysfunctional RDA.
For our municipalities and towns to continue funding SWSDA under current management conditions is not allowing this area to develop to its full potential.

Ed, With your experience in business development, what could our reps be pursuing to improve employment within the area. We've lost years of economic growth, and are now dealing with a severe downturn - not ideal conditions for engaging new business. Have our councils put too much faith in SWSDA doing a job they could have done as well if not better?
One of the comments said in effect that a land's worth is only what buyers are willing to pay. The municipality should have hired Barstow & Kendrick to develop the Sandy Point waterfront years ago - it would have saved us a bundle in the long run.

I wrote in the comment that we need a good hard working development authority. A good development authority should and could be helpful to the municipalities. The development authority should be there to help not there to take over.

There does need to be new management at SWSDA. It is time for a new CEO and new top staff also. It is time for the board wakeup and act like a proper board. Get rid of your CEO the people have spoken. The people voted out Paulette Scott because she did not do Shelburne right. The people signed a petition wanting an audit.

A CEO in a real corporation would have been voted out by now. He should be voted out now at a SWSDA board meeting. If this was a real corporation at a stock holder's annual meeting, they would stand up and vote out the CEO.

Get Frank out.....

Frank's blurred I mean tunnel vision and his MO of "my way or the highway" set this RDA on the road to failure. It's time for the muni and town councils to get busy at their drawing boards. You've given SWSDA a chance to work for too many wasted years and it's time to end the relationship.

Why would Anderson need an office in the library when he's got a whole castle here in Yarmouth?

I agree with Anon 1 and 2 - if SWSDA is to continue it needs a new CEO and a trained group on the Board of Directors. I notated from somewhere on Not-For-Profit BofD Fiduciary Duties - that the BofD should protect themselves against potential liability by voting against actions or motions they don't agree with, and then to make sure that their dissenting voice is recorded in the minutes of the board meeting.
I have seen few signs of that in the SWSDA minutes I've read, or have the directors agreed with pretty well everything that has occured in the past thirteen years?
As for Frank filling in for Rod as responsible officer in reviewing the expense info, can't you see that black marker running out of ink now, especially when it centres on coinciding dates...

It's a small world after all, as I believe a recipient of a recent award for volunteering with Shelburne's Friends of the Libary, Ms. Edith Bower, is the mother of Joan Bower, Development Officer in SWSDA's Shelburne office.
Edith has done an excellent job in raising funds for new books through yard sales, etc. so this takes nothing away from her devoted volunteerism. Thanks Edith!

Anon l:23, No, this Edith Bower has devoted years to the library and isn't Joan's mother.
